John Snellings
My name is John Snellings and I’d like to give a brief
description of myself and my love of woodcarving. As a
young boy I was constantly roaming through the woods
around my home in Virginia with my trusty bowie knife
and hatchet. I would make bows, arrows, walking
sticks or anything that came to mind.
While growing up, I remember only one older man
who did any type of woodcarving. As a youngster I had
a desire to create items not seen anywhere else. To this
day, I look for inspiration that will become a unique
carving and something that people will find appealing. The process of imagining a new creation and producing it is especially meaningful.
At 18 years of age, I enlisted in the US Air Force. In civilian life, I worked for 42 years for the Department of Defense through the Army.
I married and raised 3 children. When I had free time, I would work on making furniture – benches, tables, cabinets, and items
for an Etsy shop.
Retirement afforded me more time and a desire to pursue woodcarving. My wife and I moved to North Carolina to be close to our daughter and grandchildren. I began to carve shore birds and duck decoys as the coastal area offered me the opportunity to
sell my art at various craft shows.
My desire is that others might enjoy the creative results of woodcarving.
