A little bit whimsy, a little bit boho.
Ruth was inspired to paint rocks when her husband found a "kindness rock" while fishing from the rip-rap of the old Highway 99 Belhaven bridge in early 2018. She has enjoyed drawing and painting since childhood and was intrigued by the possibilities of creating on this unconventional surface. Her rocks are sourced from landscaping companies that allow her to pick through the piles to find preferred shapes and sizes. They can be very challenging to paint on. Most of them are not flat, and are rough and have flaws. They are painted with brushes, no paint pens. Eye liner brushes and toothpicks are the go-to tools for the fine details in these nature-inspired "stone canvases". She uses acrylic craft paint and seals the rocks with ArtResin, a clear coat, non-toxic, high-gloss epoxy.
And, in honor of what started the interest in rock painting, from time to time she paints simple designs on rocks to leave in public places to bring joy to those lucky enough to find them.
