Kathy Dunning
I first started in ceramics in the 90’s and since then it had been a process of learning and
creating. Although the wheel fascinates me now, I began with molds and intricate painting on
the clay. I soon realized np matter how intricate the painting or how bright the colors were this
was not the medium for me. The need to make it all my own which led me to the wheel.
I am in a constant search to learn more/. I’m always in search of ways to create my pots.
Everything from the clay, to the form, glazes and firing is a constant learning experience.
Continuing the search, leads me to more and more teachers. Each one has a lesson to be
learned to help me create the pots that I want. I do not want to imitate or copy someone else’s
pots. I want to make my own.
As life progresses so has my environment. I started out in a suburb of Washington, DC. As
retirement from my career loomed, we decided to move closer to my brother-in-law. This
brought me to the heat and colors of the desert, bringing a change in the colors and forms that
I made.
Hopefully we have made the final move and we are in Eastern North Carolina to be near our
daughter. It will be a new journey into the colors and forms to be created.
